1. Introduction Edinburgh Hindu Mandir & Cultural Centre (EHMCC) is committed to ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all individuals, including children, young people, and vulnerable adults. We recognize our duty to safeguard and protect those at risk from harm, abuse, and exploitation.
2. Scope This policy applies to all EHMCC trustees, committee members, volunteers, staff, and any individual involved in Mandir activities. It covers all events, services, and interactions within Mandir premises and affiliated activities.
3. Principles
- The welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults is paramount.
- All individuals, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial or ethnic background, religious belief, sexual orientation, or identity, have the right to protection from abuse.
- EHMCC will take all concerns and allegations of abuse seriously and respond appropriately.
- EHMCC promotes a culture of respect, transparency, and accountability in safeguarding matters.
4. Definitions
- Children & Young People: Anyone under the age of 18.
- Vulnerable Adult: A person aged 18 or over who may be unable to protect themselves from harm due to age, illness, disability, or other circumstances.
- Abuse: Physical, emotional, sexual, financial, or neglectful actions that cause harm.
5. Safeguarding Responsibilities
- Trustees & Management Committee: Ensure safeguarding policies and procedures are in place and reviewed annually.
- Safeguarding Officer: A designated individual responsible for handling safeguarding concerns.
- Volunteers & Staff: Must adhere to this policy, report concerns, and promote a safe environment.
6. Safer Recruitment
- All staff and volunteers working with children and vulnerable adults must undergo appropriate background checks (e.g., Disclosure Scotland PVG scheme).
- References and interviews will be conducted to ensure suitability.
7. Recognising & Reporting Concerns
- Any concern regarding abuse, neglect, or harm should be reported to the designated Safeguarding Officer immediately.
- Reports will be handled confidentially and in line with legal requirements.
- In cases of immediate danger, emergency services should be contacted (999).
8. Responding to Allegations
- All allegations will be taken seriously and investigated appropriately.
- EHMCC will work with relevant authorities (police, social services) when necessary.
- Support will be provided to victims and affected individuals.
9. Code of Conduct
- Treat everyone with dignity and respect.
- Avoid situations where an adult is alone with a child or vulnerable adult, unless in an open and observable setting.
- No physical punishment or inappropriate contact.
- Promote a culture where individuals feel safe to report concerns.
10. Training & Awareness
- Regular safeguarding training will be provided to trustees, staff, and volunteers.
- Information on safeguarding policies will be made available to all members and visitors.
11. Review & Monitoring
- This policy will be reviewed annually and updated as required.
- Feedback from members and safeguarding authorities will be incorporated into policy updates.
